Jiofi: Keep these tips in mind to stay safe on the internet

Browsing the internet is considered a hobby nowadays since it contains everything you need such as entertainment, information and communication. With these in mind, it is important to practice safety with these tips, so you can continue using the web.

  1. Use a VPN

It is sad to say that your IP address is not as safe as it seems since hackers nowadays have tools to easily spot your location. This alarming reality has also caused a lot of criminal acts where the innocents have lost their identity online due to theft. To prevent such a thing from happening to you, it is recommended for you to use a virtual private network or VPN for short.

A VPN keeps your connection to the internet secure because it masks your current IP address. Instead of displaying your current location, your device will enter a different server. In turn, no one can ever track where you are right now, and it also covers your traces on the websites you visit.

  1. Save your passwords offline instead online

Whenever you log in to your social media accounts, does your browser ask if you want to save your username and password? If so, make sure that you press the ‘no’ button. While this option appears convenient and helpful, there is still a risk of you getting hacked. Since you store all of your passwords in one place, this will be easily taken from you.

Instead of saving your passwords online, it is best to write them down on a piece of paper. This document will be safely present in your room at all times, and no one can ever steal it from you. The challenge now is for you to store this paper somewhere safe and accessible at the same time.

  1. Only connect to private routers

Connecting to the internet is essential nowadays since most of your work is present online. As such, you would always look for a wireless router wherever you go, but you should be wary of the ones you connect to. Public routers tend to be a target for hackers since they have an unsecured interface that is easy to break down.

With that said, you should always connect to private routers only for your security. Mobile devices nowadays can easily detect if the connection you are trying to make is secure or not, which makes it easier for you to avoid the problem.

  1. Never visit unsecured websites

You also need to be aware of the websites you visit online since some of them are not secure. The only way to determine their security is by looking at their URL address. If it contains ‘HTTPS’, this is a good sign that the website has good security. So if you happen to encounter a link that does not have that, never click on them.
